Product Description Step-up from the standard zoom kit lens and explore the world of portrait photography with the SAL50F18 50mm 1.8 lens. It has a large aperture which makes it easy to get those great portrait shots. The SAL50F18 is one of the first fixed focal length lenses in the DT series, which is designed exclusively for a DSLRs that use an APS-C type sensor. SAL 50 F1.8 Lens Features - SteadyShot INSIDE In-Camera Image Stabilization
A major reason for its compact, lightweight lens design is the benefit of SteadyShot INSIDE in-camera image stabilization, built into every (alpha) DSLR camera - and enabling lenses to eliminate the extra weight and expense of in-lens stabilization mechanisms. - DT Lens Design
A more compact, lightweight lens designed specifically for the APS-size CCD imager used in some Sony (alpha) DSLR cameras. - Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM)
The built-in Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) eliminates the need to use a mechanical coupling system in the camera body to transfer auto foucs (AF) drive power and control signals to the lens. Instead, AF control signals from the camera body are sent to the lens-mounted SAM unit, which drives the focusing lens group directly, helping to assure smooth AF response. - ED (Extra-low Dispersion) Glass
To reduce chromatic aberration at telephoto extension, correcting certain wavelengths of light for sharp, clear images with well defined colors. - Circular Aperture
Because aperture blades form a near circle at the wide openings used for low-light shots, spot-light sources have a pleasing circular defocused effect. Please note: DT lenses are not recommended for use with the DSLR-A900.

I LOVE this lens August 27, 2010 G. Schienbein (AB Canada) All of my pictures turn out wonderfully the first time. Has practically removed any need to photoshop. The colour is great, the lighting is beautiful and focus is sharp. I can't say enough about it! I've already used it to take a million shots of my baby niece... and used it as an alternative for a wedding shoot. The bride and groom were incredibly impressed with the proofs from this lens in particular.
Good Value for Money August 23, 2010 T. Wazzi The Lens arrived on time, properly sealed in its box with all the necessary information
The lens itself is amazing. Lightweight, compact, and provides high quality photos with alot of sharpness. It totally beats the 18-70mm that came as a kit lense.
autofocus might have a hard time getting exactly what u want, especially when its on 1.8, but the depth of field at this range or even higher is very very good.
Needs some practice to get it exactly light, but its definitely worth the purchase.
Its really is good value for money, and a nice lens to have and use often
You will rediscover photography!! July 20, 2010 M. Mokrzewski (Toronto) Bombarded with messages that switching to a prime will make you a better photographer, I was skeptical at first, but ultimately made the plunge.
All I can say is : wow. This lens, coupled with a Minolta f/4 (i.e. The Beercan) made me re-evaluate what my Sony a200 was capable of.
Sharp as a tack, highly capable in low light situations, punchy yet accurate colour reproduction, bokeh as smooth as butter.. and all this for less than $200? Granted, it's no Zeiss f/1.4, but it doesn't cost nearly as much either.
As an added bonus, it truly will make you a better photographer in that you will now pay infinitely more attention to framing the shot.
On a side note, I was actually impressed as to the build quality. While it is made of plastic, the fit and feel seemed considerably higher than the equivalent Canon 50mm f/1.8 Mk II and seemed smoother in AF. I guess Sony has a reputation to establish.
I also compared it to the oft-used Minolta 50 mm f/1.7. And while it pales in build quality to the venerable Minolta, I was pleasantly surprised to discover the Sony yielding much sharper images than the Minolta.
Love it May 23, 2010 C. Cabrera (Novi, MI) Love this lens - it's so affordable and offers some great results! The low f1/8 means I can bump up my shutter speed and catch some great action shots as well as indoor shots without a flash. I can also get some beautiful blurry backgrounds for quick portraits. Love love love!
Great lens w/plenty of light for the price. April 14, 2010 VallejoTex (DFW, TX USA) i really wanted a bigger lens but could not afford it right now so i opted for this one. i love it! it provides plenty of light for what you can use it for. took my first job with it and it did a great job. the photos turned out great. I highly recommend it.
